Deep Snow Report

This past week the Sierra mountains in California saw blizzard conditions with over 18" of snow and ice. My X5 was put to the test on unplowed and icy mountainous roads. I was on a ski vacation at Lake Tahoe with some buddies and their wives who brought their 2005 Denali and a new Jeep Liberty.

The X5 was able to keep up with these SUV's over every terrain. I had my Z-chains in the back but never had to put them on. Many times my traction DSC light was flashing and the ABS was buzzing but the X5 was stable and always in control. This included breaking trail in 10" snow of unplowed roads and starting and stopping on uphill and downhill grades.

Today we drove home over Donner Summit at 7200 feet in whiteout conditions as I passed many cars with chains on stuck the side of the road and a few 4 wheel drives spun sideways. It took 4 hours to travel 75 miles of snow packed roads. I am very proud of my X5 performance in adverse conditions and consider it my ultimate ski vehicle.

Tahoe didn't have a lot of snow until this week. 30" fell at Squaw in 2 days and it's still coming down. Bring your powder skiis!

Many people don't think it snows in California at all.

Or for Nevada for that matter. I go to the places that get snow in the winter (WY,CO,UT,OR, BC) in the summer. Not as much tourists, good hiking, lots of fun stuff.

Just imagine how well it'd handle with proper snow tires!
