Angry Updated Pics - Rear-ended on 101 - Hitch saves the day

I was stopped at an off ramp on 101 and BANG, this Passat going at high speed slammed into me from behind. I saw it coming so I braced and pressed my brakes. Fortunately my hitch was on so it took 100% of the impact. Fluids sprayed out of the gaping hole the hitch left in his engine compartment. His car was not pretty, his car wouldn't start. We exchanged information and I drove away.

I guess I need to bring it to the stealer to check for structural damage?

Yes, I know, this thread is useless without pics...fortunately I had a disposable camera. I will upload pics of the damage tomorrow.

Update: Here are the pics. For those modding your cars...add a hitch to that list. This would have had a very different outcome without it.

Glad you're okay but sorry for the hassle. It's a remote possibility but make sure your exhausts weren't pushed in. Like I said, it's a remote thing but I know of one very unfortunate X5 that suffered a cracked block because the exhaust was pushed very hard into the engine.

i'm glad you and your X okay
good thing the X takes impacts very well

you should always professionally check the car after the accident; there always may be internal problems

which offramp were you at?

That's exactly why I leave the tongue and ball installed in the hitch all the time.... it's definitely saved my bumpers from everything from minor to major damage... good luck with the body shop, hopefully there isn't any major damage to your X.
