Stuck panoramic/moon roof

Over the weekend I opened and closed the roof a few times in both fully open and tilted positions. I noticed when opening that it started to make a clicking type sound and assumed the roof had become a bit stuck due to the warm weather.

I subsequently realised that the smaller, rear section of the panoramic/moon roof won’t close

. More accurately, one side remains open whilst the other side drops. It’s not easy to see what is going on but from squeezing my head up against the glass to see what is happening and it appears that the toothed runner on the failed site isn’t moving. The larger front section moves but the smaller panel remains vertical on one side. I’ve done a few searches on here but can't find much other than some scary quotes to replace/rebuild sections of the roof. Tried the reset thing but pretty sure this is mechanical as opposed to electrical. Also checked realoem but the diagrams are too small to see what should be going on.

Anyone had anything similar and been able to resolve? I don’t mind a bit of DIY but suspect that even if I knew how to dissemble the roof putting it back together would be rather tricky. A nice diagram or picture of the runners might help.

Welcome to the club, it's a common problem. Dealer initially tried changing just the cassette in ours, but ended up replacing the entire assembly.

Given the car is our of warranty and i'll be footing the bill I hope there is more cost effective solution. Replacing the whole unit sounds like the easiest (and most lucrative) suggestion from the dealers point of view.

More than four thousands dollars to replace the panoramic sunroof @ dealer. Don't mess with X5 pano sunroof.

i had the same problem at first. the only way it would go down was if i beat the hell outta the side that stayed up from the outside. eventually neither side would go down on the smaller sunroof portion. the most cost effective solution for me was to use a t25 (i think) torx screwdriver and take out the 2 screws that hold the thing up. im not very technical and i know its hard to see, but there are ramps on either side of the smaller roof with torx screws in them. remove the screws and slide the ramps toward the front of the vehicle and the smaller roof should fall to the closed position. once you take them out the smaller roof will not function anymore, but imo, it was useless anyway. you will still be able to use the larger sunroof normally. i hope this helps

Nice one drew - just the sort of low-cost intervention I'm looking for. Will give it a try tomorrow.

Does your whole roof still retract horizontaly? Obviously I wouldn't expect the small portion to operate in tilt mode.

yes, the larger roof opens all the way back to the smaller one, and still tilts. i even water tested it and no leakage. and to think, the reason i fell in love with my x was because of the pano roof
