I've got a very similar rack (thule) plus 2 bicycle holders. yes it's a pain to remove them; since the whole thing is kinda heavy and there is the stigma/fear of scratching the roof in the process.

But I take mine off when not in use, mainly cuz:

- I usually drive with the pano-roof open whenever I possibly can, and the wind noise is HUGE.
- Even with the roof closed, at (European...) Highway speeds, the noise is, again, HUMONGOUS...
- The whole setup adds quite a few inches of height to the SUV, making entrance into some low-height parking lots a frisly affair....

So considering all the minus points stated above, I'd really only keep them if I used them much, much more often than I do.

just my 2cts,

#2 -- I think it's a young, single guy thing. The roof racks work for them.

As an avid mountain biker, I beg to differ. I used my rack on my Saab regularly during the spring/summer/fall and I am 36 and married .

However, the rack is for utility, not for looks. It does not look that great on the X, so I vote take it off but keep it handy!

Okay seems like the offs have it. I could definately live without the wind noise anyways. Thank you all for your opinions.
