Looking at an X5 with bad CV Boot = help please

Looking at a ride with no warranty, but took off the price that the CV boots would cost.

My question is = how long or how bad is it to drive with a torn / leaking cv boot? I obviously don't want to wait long, but it will need to be replaced. What happens if you drive for a while on it?

Thanks in advance

When you say torn / leaking CV boot... are you referring to the CV boot cover? or the actual CV boot... big difference..

The tech said the left front was broken leaking grease. Don't know if it is the boot or the cover. If it's the boot, how bad and how long do I have?

I got 750 bucks off of the price for it.

Thanks for the help

It's about ~ $900 to replace both CV boot covers at an independent mechanic (replace in pairs).... thousands if the CV joint went bad...

Thanks for the tip. Do the joints go bad over time, or do they go bad as a result of torn covers, resulting in dirt and crud getting in there?

Thanks again.

....the latter, as I understand them......the longer you wait to fix the boot, the more crud will get in there, hastening failure....

I was able to salvage one of my half shafts because I was able to catch it early enough. So yes, the earlier the better.
