s62 motor in the X5?
Has anyone heard of an S62 (E39 M5) engine being retrofitted to a E53 X5. I am getting some miles on my 4.4 and have been considering building up another engine...I think it could be an awesome weapon. Maybe the standard auto transmission would not cope? Any feedback would be appreciated. |

Haven't heard of it done, but...why would you? The E39 made just under 400hp and 369tq....compared to the 4.8's 355hp/369tq. It would be cheaper and have a warranty to slap a supercharger on from DINAN. From which you would have much more then a 50hp gain...not to mention you could punch the torque up to 400 or so.

Hartge offered two conversions for the E53 one where they bored the 4.4 engine to 5.0 resulting in 365hp and a S62/M5 engine conversion with 400hp (however the S62 conversion was only available in a 2WD setup and manual gearbox) . The M5/S62 conversion run somewhere around ~40kUSD ....
There's a video on YouTube on the 5.0L Hartge X5 http://youtube.com/watch?v=vi1Rx3sIPeE - Jan

Supercharging option + a blueprinted 4.4 motor is probably the way to go...
