Speedo Kaputt!!!

Driving down the highway yesterday and looked down to check my speed and guess what? NO SPEEDO!

Everything else in cluster is working, except it seems to stick on a speed (whether it was stopped or mid speed) and then stays there untill you stop again.

Not overly impressed at a brand new X5 having this happen.

Has anyone had this problem?

that's bizarre.

do you have nav?

see if you can get average speeds on either the nav display OR the OBC display.

if you see a speed there, then you either have:

1) lose connection to your heads up display (dashboard)

2) bad Heads up display.

There are usually two or three cables going to the speedo display/HUD unit.

its easy to check if they are plugged in well. remove the two screws at the top of the speedo assembly underneath the hump, and gently wiggle (its tricky) the unit to you and pull it out over the steering column. check to make sure the wires are all secured (the plugs latch down and lock).

if you don't see speed info in the OBC, you quite possibly have a failed speed sensor in the tranny.

good luck

Unfortunately this is a very common problem with BMW's and VDO guages.

Thanks for the assist guys, have been busy this last few days.

There are some interesting side effects to the speedo not working. My PDC does not turn off, the trip computer does not record the mileage (you should see the horrendous fuel consumption calc it now shows) the television can remain on at speed and the OBC does not record any averages.

The dealer does not have any clusters in stock or in the country so has to get one in from Germany.

Meanwhile, I have to get to work etc so have to be mighty careful that I don't inadvertantly run foul of the speed cameras for the next 2 weeks.
