drivebelt or pulley

Dealer says it pulleys and belts. I think its belts. I spray the belts and the noise stops. I actually put baby powder on them. No noise for a long while. How can you determine if it is the belts or pulley.
Squeeks on occasion. not all the time..

if the belt is dried and chappy (you can notice it from inner side of the belt) - time to change it...if noise will not stop - go for pulleys...but remember there are three pulleys...and you don't have to change all...take out the belt...scroll the pulleys...and replace ONLY which make a noise...

Im at 69,000 miles. And the belts are due. But i didnt want to pull it apart replace the belts then realize the pulley or pulles are gone. Any thoughts on the water pump? Should that be replaced to?

not scientific but it you shoot the belt with WD40 and the noise goes away you need pulles (that trick wont last long if the belt stops making noise). Most people dont like to do that but short of releasing the belt and giving the pulles a "flick" thats the only way I know for sure

don't put any lubricant on your belts.ESPECIALLY WD40! your belt could be worn out and could be on too tight. clean your pulleys and change the belts.

The belts cant be on to tight, the tensioners prevent that. The earlier idles have a smaller bearing than the later ones and will make noise sooner in cool weather areas.

Agreed WD40 is not belt dressing it is mostly kerosene, not good for any rubber products but it will temperaraly quiet a belt if you need to do so till it evaporates.

if they will not take out the belt it's very hard, almost impossible to tell how bad the pulleys are...
