Does Navigation upgrade cost $?

I brought my X5 4.4i 05' in for service today and I asked to upgrade to OS. He said you have 2006-2 and the new one costs $250 (I dled the 2007 online, but yet have to burn it). I told him that he misunderstood me and that I wanted the OS upgraded, not the DVD. He didn't understand... Anyways, i will later talk to someone else, but does it actually cost money to upgrade the OS??? Btw, I go to the Open Road BMW in NJ...

The Nav OS Upgrade should be free.

If you read the TSB notes on nav system upgrades then you'll notice that they are not covered under warranty. If there is a specific reason why the dealer must do it then they will and it will be covered, otherwise it's a request for free labor that is not warranted and so you must pay for it.

Why don't you upgrade the software yourself. Go to the Navigation forum on X5 World and get the latest and greatest one V 29.1

Hope this helps.

Some dealers do it for free... some others don't ...

You have to choose a competent and friendly one ...

Sorry about the silly question, but what does upgrading the OS mean? Also I currently have the 2005 navigation CD and have been thinking about upgrading the CD when Navteq releases the 2008m version...will it be much of a difference ? Is it worth me shelling out the $200 bucks ?

Thanks

Hi

If this is too basic then apologies but the OS is the operating system, a bit like windows XP is to your pc. The navigation cd's are the actual maps that run on it.

Depends on your exact car date, but your operating system is around 2 years old and there have been later releases that have improvements like 3D map pespective. You can work out which version from the number displayed in the top corner of the 'set' screen 4-1/91 would be the latest. Post that number and it can be identified easily or search the board

Maps themselves. It really down to you. Have many roads changed in your area. If not then perhaps of limited value.

Got it, thanks for the explination. I have always wondered if there were some kind of upgrade that would give me the capability of giving me a 3D map perspective, will look into this further.

Thanks again
