Welcome Lee! The best thing to do before purchasing a used car (especially one that is very expensive to repair) is to have an independent mechanic give it the once over. If you did that, perhaps you could have talked the seller into lowing the price a bit to get that repair done. Did you get a warranty with your X5? Regardless, you've come to the right place. If you're interested in becoming a pro DIY'er, there are lots of folks here who can help. Congrats on your X and post some pics!!!

If you know how to turn a wrench and follow instructions, you'll solve most of your problems without emptying your bank account with the helpful posts found on this site. I have an '01 and most of what has gone wrong on mine was remedied by buying the parts and doing it myself with the help from the gracious people here.
Good luck, most of the problems the X5 has can be fixed in your garage and they're usually much easier to fix than you would expect. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find all the advice you need here.

I also have a 2000 and the only problem, knock on wood, was a cracked end tank on my radiator. Cheap to fix since I did the work myself. This site in like a BMW handbook. Anything and everything can be answered on here. The knowledge is unbelieveable!!! Also the Pixel Replacement program works. Just had to pay for labor! Welcome to the site and just relax and enjoy the X....

Learn to do simple stuff like oil and filter changes yourself at least, and then read the DIY stuff on the homepage to see if you can handle anything else that might crop up. And find a good independent BMW shop.........and by this I don't mean your local gas station.

The only thing that worries me is the transmission - hopefully it will last another 3 years. I do plan on keeping the car for as long as it keeps on going. My overall experience is that if you maintain your car it will last a long time - just depends on you! I I hope this info helps.
