Dead Battery

Hello everyone. I know that my husband usually frequents this website and he is currently deployed with the military. He instructed that while he was gone that if I had any questions about the X5 to ask it here. Luckily he thought ahead and left me his login infomation so that I could do that.

Anyway I drove the X5 yesterday and everything was fine. This morning when I went to start it up the battery was dead. So my question is what should I do? I know that if he was here he would take care of it but unfortunately he is not. I remember that last fall he changed the battery so I don't know what else to do. Also, the closest BMW dealer is about 2 hours away.

Thank you for the help,
Jennifer

Had there been any indication of trouble previously? I had a dead battery in my '02 recently. It turned out to be the "final stage resistor" in the climate control. The car was starting fine, but the a/c fan would run for a while every time I turned the car off. Have you noticed anything like that?

As for getting the vehicle started, follow the instructions in the manual. You will have to use another vehicle as the little charge box jump start dealies do not have enough power. Recommend you call AAA or look in the phone book for a service station that provides jump start service.

No problems at all. The reason that we changed the battery last fall was that we left the DVD player plugged in overnight. My husband said that it looked like an original so he changed it. I guess that I have never really paid attention to if the fan shut off after I shut the car off. Is this final stage resistor thingy something that my dad could replace if I got another one or do I need to take it to the dealer? I have another appointment in Omaha on Monday and can get one up then.

Thank you for the help.

Small world. Call Markel at 402.393.9700. Ask for Mike in BMW service. Explain the situation and let him know you are coming. They should be able to test your electrical system to determine the problem. There are instructions on the home page of this site here that detail the replacement process. Your Dad should be able to tackle this. I am not sure Markel will have this part in stock. But, when I described the problem I was having to Mike he knew exactly what it was.

Thank you Bill. I will give Mike a call. I don't know if I want to drive the X5 two hours down to Omaha for my appointment though. I am afraid that it might not start again and then I will be stuck there. Do you think I will be ok if I put a charger on it?

Well, looks like my wife is having problems. Anyone else have any suggestions that I might give her?

Her father is not the most mechanically inclined, so i hope that it is something simple.

It sounds like a weak or dead battery. Try charging it over night and see if it will hold a charge. Or you can jump start it and take it in for a battery check at a local service station. If your battery is a few years old it is probably the culprit. You can remove the battery and take it into an AutoZone or similar store and they will usually test it for free.

Thanks for the help jek, but as per her first post, I installed a new battery last fall. I wonder if Batteries plus will replace it?

If a good trickle charger is handy, I'd hook it up, via the
under the hood method, for overnight. Then if it cranks
and starts fine, haul fanny to the closest battery joint
or dlr. A charge crummy battery should run fine, on
highway, even with less than full charge as the alternator
will be "feeding" it. (Unless the alt. is shot.)

It sounds like a new batt is in order, however, from some
source: auto joint, Batt. Plus, stlr, et al.

Wish we were closer. I'd come and help out your Wife.
