squeaky breaks...on a new car

I have about 3,000 miles on my X5. For some reason I hear a squeak when I apply my breaks. Not all the time, but intermittently. The brake pads cannot be bad since its a new car, so what could be the cause of this squeak? I dont want to ruin my rotors or anything else, but before I went to the dealership, I figured this may be worth a quick post

Thanks!

Well kind of hard to tell since we can't see the brakes but you may have glazed the rotors. Are you heavy with the brakes? If you ride brakes hard or in a consistent 'hard' manner you can glaze the pad, this is where friction actually burns a glaze onto the pad which can cause some sound.

Same problem. Finally at 18000 mi they started shuttering and rotors were warped.

I assume your warranty covered this BIG expense.....not that I am willing to wait that long. I was just curious. So it was glazed rotors?

I am going to the dealer on Saturday morning.

Fully covered, yes. Just take it in and get it documented when you are ready.
Not sure if they were glazed, but they were warped.

The pads might be glazed or there is a brake dust accumulation or they didn't apply grease to the back of the pads/shims at the factory. Whatever the reason, you should be covered by the warranty as long as the dealer can 'duplicate' the problem.

Same problem.
My break started to squeak @ around 5k miles.
Took it to my dealer and basically they found the one of the break component, "break caliper" if I recall correctly, needs "Re-Lubrication?".
They also found some wheel wax residue on the break and guessed that was the stuff washed out the lubrication.

Often the noise can come from the Guide Bolt (PIN) #4, 5, and 6

On all of my BMWs they have at some time the brakes have managed to squeak, almost regardless of pads, rotors, anti-squeal or not, etc.

There are 2 things to try that work relatively well for getting rid of the squeaking for a while, though it does often come back:

1. Drive in reverse with foot on brake for a good bit, please don't back into anything.

2. Hard stop from a decent speed, without fully stopping (similar to the bedding process).

Note: none of this will help if you have warped rotors as some have found to be their issue).

Has your car been sitting for longer then a week??? If so then this could be your problem. When the car is parked for a very long time. Sometimes the pads leave a small indent on the rotors. This can cause squeaking for a little while until the rotors and pads even out. I would suggest the bedding process for a little while and if that doesn't work take it in and get it checked, since it is under warranty. Good Luck
