question about manual mode on x5 auto

hi, most of the time i drive on D but tonight i played around with manual mode.

i switched over when car is at a stop light. can you switch mode when car is moving? cant seem to find much info in onwers manual.

i also noticed the car downshift automatically in manual mode but i still need to upshift myself.

so if i have it in gear 1 and floor it will it change gears at high rpm or do i need to do it?

thanks.

From what I know,
"Manual mode" is really two modes. You can shift it over once and not touch the shifter up or down and it is in "Sport mode" which leaves you at higher rpm for quick acceleration/deceleration. Once you go into "Sport" mode then you can either downshift or up shift. In "sport mode" it should up shift for you. Now remember if you are in sport mode then start shifting manually you will need to continue shifting or bring it back to sport mode by going into normal drive (right) then pulling back into sport mode (left).

Also if you leave it in manual mode and floor it when you hit red line it will automatically up shift for you. To answer your last question. Although this probably is not to good for the car to redline it all the time...

Not true, if you turn off DSC (when you redline it wont upshift, might be dangerous)

I tend to use the 'manual' mode if I am driving on twisty roads with some hills so as to stop the 'auto' box constantly shifting up and down too much!

also, is it just me, or driving the same way (heavy footed or conservative) in D vs. Sport... that you get better MPG with Sport/Man?

I have noticed in the city, making the same drive between Maple Valley and Renton to VMC, that I would average 16-16.5 in "D", and 18.5-19 in sport mode or manual... that seems backwards to me, but this is assuming the same slightly heavy footed driving, with a 3.0i. I guess this echos the idea that MT usually gets better MPG than AT... but the same transmission in a different mode?

anyone else notice this? Even with my wife (very conservative driver) driving, she gets 16 mpg and I know she always drives in D, and I drive it right after her without re-setting the computer, and I can make the MPG climb up to at least 17-18 by shifting into Sport or Manual Mode.

OMG - I have owned this X for over 2 years and never knew it had the Sport mode until after reading this post!!!!! I just thought it had the "D"rive and Manual (I thought the M/S on the console stood for Manual Shift and thought the dash said D5, not D "S"). And I have read on here where people were driving in Sport mode, but I just thought that was on newer or on Sport edition X's. I have driven in Sport mode for the past few days and LOVE it!!!! And I have not seen a change in my gas mileage (Ave. 18.2 mpg)

Goes to show you -
