Roof rack cross rails

I have searched this and I come up with a bunch of roof rack deletes but
I have the standard roof rack on my X5 and want to add cross rails to add a Thule or Yakima box
any body know where to get them and how to install them and how much they are?
thanks in advance.

Try thule.com or yakima.com.

I use Thule load bars. I recommend the Thule 450 Crossroad feet (which attach to the BMW rails) and Thule LB58 load bars, which are 58 inches long. Consider adding a set of 6 locks so that you have a single key and the rack stays attached to your vehicle.

You can get away with shorter bars (I have a set of 50" bars from a previous vehicle that I have used) but they will only just reach across. It is a cleaner installation, but you won't be able to attach carriers as easily near the edge of the vehicle, as there is no load bar sticking out from the attachment feet when they are mounted on an E53 X5.

There is a fancier Thule load bar available (rapid), with different feet, but I don't see the point unless you want to quickly change carriers on the load bars.

There are also wind deflectors available, but I haven't used them.

You can build this up on thule.com, and see their list of dealers. Many auto parts places carry Thule.

WRT installation, the above parts assemble without tools. 10 minute job once you have done it once. You will need to attach the box to the load bars.

Good luck.

Thanks JCL
so Thule or Yakima has the cross rails to attach to the BMW
longtitdinal rails, not BMW?
thanks I apprecaite it. I dont need a fancy speed box or air deflectors
just the rocket pack so I can get all my wifes gear which exceeds me and my two boys stuff when we go some place

You can buy the BMW rails and attachment feet, but they are at BMW prices. I like the Thule load bars, they are robust and easy to attach to (rectangular). The Thule Crossroad 450 attachment feet work with many different rail profiles, they have a rubber strap that cinches around the rail, tightens securely, and can be locked in place. They fit perfectly on the X5 rails.

The best place I have found to purchase load bars / roof racks / etc is http://www.orsracksdirect.com/

They often run specials.

I purchased the Thule load bars. They are easy to install and don't scratch your rails.

right on nietodp. I got the Yakima Lowrider roof rack for my 2006 BMW X5. When I put my order in it turns out I ordered the 48 inch cross bars that are too short. They contacted me and explained I needed the 58 inch length ones for the X5. Very cool I thought. Also, when I was researching around online on what to get I came across this coupon EXTRA10 for an additional 10% off my order with ORS Racks Direct. They don't see mto advertise this anywhere on their site so this could be a juicy nugget for anyone thinking about getting a roof rack. FYI the Lowider couldn't have installed on the BMW X5 siderails any easier and trust me I'm no mechanically inclined person!
