Fluid Leak from Auto Trans Linkage Shaft

My 2001 X5 4.4i has minor trans fluid seepage from the rubber seal around the gear selector linkage shaft that goes into the transmission housing just above the fluid pan.

Can I safely remove the bad seal and replace it with the new without fluid gushing out? Or, is this something that someone like me shouldn't even attempt? Thanks.

Drain the fluid, replace seal, refill fluid.

yes, you can pull it out and change it. DO NOT drain the fluid.
