i too have the same problem...i do notice the noise more if for some reason the cover is not properly/fully closed.

unfortunately, i'm not one of the smart guys you're lookin' for. i wanna know the fix myself...

wow, you actually do the same thing that I do. i thought i was the only paranoid one that sometimes, turns everything off and closes all window to hear if there's any rattling noise in the car...good to know someone else does the same thing!

Step 1: Open trunk
Step 2: Remove cover
Step 3: Close trunk
Noise gone.

Sorry just wanted to say that. Mine too comes undone, but luckly no noise.

remove cover? NO WAY! in the trunk/rear compartment I always keep some miscellaneous items for Car Wash...and I got no desire to make all this stuff visible thru back window (even if it's tinted).

Anyway thanks for suggestion...any more fresh ideas?

Give the dealer a call and ask them what they suggest to solve this problem. You would be surprised how helpful they can be with a cheerful customer.

I believe to suggestion to remove it may be valid also just to see it it's not something else.

I had what I thought was a similar rattle on my first X5. However it turned out that it wasn't the cover at all. I removed it and found the same rattle persisted. Eventually I tracked it down to the toolkit under the trunk floor. Some judicial taping of the offending objects got rid of the rattle. There have been many other debates on the cause of rattles at the rear of pre-facelift X5s - worthwhile checking them out too.

The facelifted E53s are screwed together much better
