Can someone explain this??

I'd say about once every 12 to 15 starts, I turn the key and I get the initial starter engagement and that's it. It is the same thing you get when you try to start a car with a practically dead battery. After this failed attempt I simply turn the key to the off position and restart the car without a problem.
Anyone experience this? Ideas as to what causes it?
Thanks and have a great July 4th!

I have the same problem with my 4.4L. Wonder if the starter is about to die...

Mine did that too. I never gave it a second thought, though, cause it worked if you just tried starting it again.

The starter is fine, a friend at work says it may have something to do with the pushing of the lock/alarm button on the key while trying to start. Possibly this is causing the computer to get mixed signals or something. Hell if I know

I had this same problem with my 2002 540i. It's not accidental pushing of key buttons. Dealer could never reproduce it. Lease ended...

My 4.4i did it and my 4.6is does it. I'm not sure what causes it. I didn't think it would happen on the 4.6is since it has convience start. I guess it's not a big deal. After it happens, it starts right up. Now I really won't worry too much since it's not just me
with the issue...............Phil

Like yourself, I'm not really worried about it, just perplexed as to why...plus I hate the look I get from a passenger when they hear it happen.

Common problem on 540,740, and X5's with V8's. DME needs to be reprogrammed. There is a bulletin out on this issue. Service measure B12 200 03.

I get it.. a lot.

Sometimes when I'm driving and M mode, and I come to a stop sign, the car will stall and then shut off.

I'm not worried, just a simple take out the key, put it back in and restart works fine. I never knew my BMW ran Windows

But in the end of the day, I knew I'd have problems with my X5, mainly because it wasn't a Lexus
