drivers airbag

i have an 03 x5 3.0
i have got a problem with the driver airbag
the airbag warning light came on
so a friend of mine is a mechanic and i got him to check out the problem but his scanner told driver airbag stage 1 the scanner is snap-on
i then booked the car into my local dealer to code read the car
they said the same driver airbag but its not a perminant fault they said it triggered the fault 14 times from when my mate reset the light to taking the car to the dealer which was about a week and a half
after the dealer reset the the warning lamp it only took a couple of hours for the light to come back on
after some time my mate removed the airbag from the steering wheel to check the connections behind but all was ok
he then reset the light and after a couple of days the light came on again
does any1 have any advice for me
thanks
