Gearbox trouble

Hey! I have a 2001 X5 3.0 with steptronic. When driving in steptr modus I experience hard gear shift. This can also happen in normal modus when driving a little bit aggresive. Also when putting the car in "drive" it makes a mechanicle click sound. Any clues of what this is?
Sounds expensive to me.....!

If it makes you feel better, I have a 2001 4.4 ltr which does all the same things. 120000 + miles.

As far as the hard shift. There are ways to reset the trans controller. You can search the site for those. I'm not sure exactly how. Something with key in position two and holding the gas pedal @ a point for a set time. Another is to disconnect the battery overnight. You can also get the controller reflashed at the dealer. The easiest thing to do is leave it in auto mode instead of putting it into sport or steptronic mode.

As far as a replacement. It aint broke, don't fix it; but, there are a few used parts dealers here in the US. Not sure about across the pond.

Why not check to see whether or not the fluid level is low first? I know it's a "sealed" system, but you should still give it a shot. Much less expensive than swapping out the gearbox.

I'm guessing it may be drive line slack. A cumulation of all of the individual pieces; drive shaft, bushings, CV's, transmission, and 3 differentials. Or, one in particular is bad. A few minutes on a rack should tell the story. How many miles on your X5? Good luck
