2001 X5 A/C Compressor

All,

I recently had my A/C recharged because the dealer said I should! Well, it worked for a few days, then nothing! Went back to the dealer, and they said they took a look a the A/C system with an infared light (or something to that manner) and found a crack in the compressor. $2000 to fix?? YIKES!!! Anybody heard of this happening before to an A/C compressor?

anybody have any good leads as to where I can get a referbed A/C compressor for less than the $1200 the dealer wants for the part alone??

Thanks in advance.
Scott

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Isn't it insane how much A/C compressors and parts cost? Pretty much any make of car will cost you that much. My sister had an Infiniti/Nissan as a beater that lost a part of the compressor and since they didn't sell that part alone, she had to buy the whole thing at about the same price no matter where she checked for a deal. (She decided to not repair it and just got rid of the car.) Mine A/C compressor on my '02 also died but luckily I have an extended warranty and it saved my butt.

You can try a wrecker. Most of the other sources might not ship to Canada but you can try a BMW dealer stateside, like Morristown BMW or Crevier BMW.

You can pick up BMW AC compressors on the auto parts market. Most run around $600 if I remember correctly from my search earlier this year. Any good auto repair shop can install and recharge the system. I didn't save the searches because all I needed this time were AC service port valves.
