Unhappy Exterior door handle not opening door.

Hi all,

All of a sudden today, my driver's side exterior door handle decided to malfunction. When I pull the door handle (unlocked) from outside, nothing happens. I'm not sure if the cable snapped or disconnected. How easy/hard is it to remove the interior door panel and see if it's slipped off? I'm assuming if it is, it can't be too hard to fix. is there a link to this repair? While I'm there, the door lock actuator has been failing for some time. Some times it pops up/down with central locking, sometimes it doesn't. Is that an easy DYI or should I have dealer look at it. FYI, it is an '01 3.0i. I am the original owner and am within 50 miles of 100k miles.

Thanks in advance.

I just had this same problem 2 weeks ago. I went to the dealer and the looked into it and the whole inside handle mechansim was broken. They had to order a new handle get it painted and some internal door parts. I could open the door by reaching in and using the interior door handle but not exterior. Its not a simple DIY from what i heard so hit the dealer.

i am in the same boat, mine is totally bent to shit tho and no longer opens the door. I don't even know what parts i need. The indy mech said he might be able to fix it without replacing any parts, we'll see.

Are you suggesting a DYI? If so, how easy/hard is it. Any info is greatly appreciated.

BMW had to order a whole new exterior door handle for my problem and that had to be painted. The problem i had is when you lifted the exterior handle it did not open yet it would open with the intereior handle. They said the linkage was broke internally and had to order a new handle becuase the part that connected it to the linkage was broke. It was all under warranty so it didnt matter.

Thanks for the input. Mine is way out of warranty (just about 100k miles on an '01). That's why I always consider the DYI if it's in reason.
