Wipers work only 25% of the time, need help

My 2000 X5 is having wiper issues. If it is raining and you turn them on, they start working for 5 minutes. Then they just stop working. You can't do anything and its very unsafe. You can turn on the rear wiperl, but not the front ones. They just stay off.

I do not have the Rain Sensor.
I have just replaced the wiper motor.
All fuses are fine.

Any other ideas of what I can be missing? Its driving me crazy.

vbtrader, i am having exactly the same problem on my 05 E53. but mine run for longer than yours say up to 30 mins. it has been in to the steelers and they have fitted a new wiper relay. after a few days of use they have failed in the same way again.... and YES it is bloody dangerous as when they fail its not funny. it goes back in on Monday and i will be asking for the stealer to change any item in the wipers circuit as it cant happen again.

unfortunalely they do not stay failed and always restart after a while.

Dario

OK, the wipers failed again today on the way to the stealers.... as luck would have it. i called ahead and got a technician to come out to the lot so that a) they could see the fault and b) i did not have to tun off the ignition.

got a phone call this evening to advise me that they had traced the fault to the wiper motor. (i think i saw this somewhere else) the wiper relay expects to receive a "parked" signal back from the wiper motor every revolution. if for some reason the relay receives no signal (ie the wiper arms are mechanically stuck - possibly ice/snow) then it cuts the power to the motor. switch off the ignition and a set period of time later the system resets.

hopefully the diagnosis is correct and time WILL tell.

think i will probably get the car back and set a sprinkler up to spray on the windshield for a couple of hours with the wipers running. that way i at least i can try and get some confidence back with the bloody car.
