The 2005 X5 comes with a new BT/Assist module made by Motorola. It only has voice recognition for the phone system. There is an optional SES module to add the nav commands. But really, the phone voice recognition commands are the most useful.

The answer to your question is NO. But you do have voice recognition for the phone.

The BT/Assist module has a male voice. The older ULF bluetooth-only module (made by Visteon) has a female voice and has a full voice recognition.

I bought the voice module for my 05 4.4i and it has a female voice. The command I use most often is: Show Restaurants Near Current Location.

When I am out and about town I just say that and sort through the restaurants on the screen. Then select one.

Yes you can enter names using your voice. All it is doing though is linking a voice command to a specific item in your already loaded phone book.

My understanding is that you have the hardware installed, for full voice activation, however it is not active until the dealer changes the settings (read you pay money) to give you that benefit.

My 2005 has it and the dealer did it as part of the delivery price I negotiated.
