Anyone Upgrade Just The DSP Subwoofers?

Has anyone ever just replaced the sub speakers with aftermarket? If so, did you have to get an amp, or can the factory power them?

I know this probably wouldn't be the best solution, but my friend has some Focal 13KS 5" subs that he doesn't need. I would love to throw those in there, but if they need an amp or the ohms don't match up, I won't do it.

you can just swap them out.

more powerful sub = more powerful amp;

unless u get a small sub to match wit the oem amp, but i dont think ive heard of anyone doing that

Thanks for the link. I was actually looking at BSW for the door speakers. I would just love to get a little extra thump from the subs. I actually took them apart and they have dual voice coils going to them, so it will probably be really hard to find a 5.25" subwoofer with dual coils.

Does the factory DSP system have a separate amp for the sub?

Be aware that the stock subs are 8ohms unlike most after market subs which are 4ohms. Therefore you could replace the TWO 8ohms 6" stock subs by ONE bigger 4ohms sub. If you used two 4ohms subs you would get to an overall 2ohms impedance only (and even lower at some frequencies as a loudspeaker impedance is not consistent across its frequency range) and end up with blowing your stock amp. Not good.

I would advise you to rather add a subamp and sub. Not only you will be safe but the result will be much better.

If I did switch to one sub, then I would have to do some other upgrades and get an amp and a box and all. Or are you suggesting that the stock amp could power one 4ohms sub?
It just sucks that they are 8ohm and dual coil. Not many speakers have this option.
