Question New Comfort Glass - Slight Distortion

I had my new comfort glass installed yesterday. I love it!! It is not purple like the pic in the articles section. It has the faintest blue to it. Definitely has a tint to it.

Had it installed by Alpha Auto Glass in Ft Lauderdale. Had them do it because the dealer lies!!! (Can you believe it???) Dealer told me it takes 2 days. That is complete BS. The only reason they do that is so they can have the 3rd party come over and install the glass. The place that did my install actually does the work for the BMW dealer!!!!! Oh, BMW wanted $1,450 for the parts and labor. Alpha was about $800 less!!! (Gieco covered it all!!) I was in and out in 2 hours....

Now, my glass has the slightest distortion at the extreme edge of the passenger side. Goes from top to bottom along the edge, comes in maybe 1/2 an inch. Does anyone else have a little bit of distortion?? If I am the only one I will take it back and see if we can get another one.... conversely if it is normal I can live with it.

no x5s came with the glass...only bmws i know of that comes standard is on the 7

when you see a car with comfort glass, you see a little purple tint. not sure, but i think it's mercury (?). it allows certain light emissions to enter, and not others. and i think you can't use a radar detector or toll booth transponder with it

...anyway...i love the comfort glass. it's just that everytime you take a pic of it, it comes out way blue, totally unlike that in real life

distortion can be common in some glass, but you should really check it out

I thought the front glass has to be heated and CLAMPED in place for 24 hours in order for the sealant to properly seal the glass?

One comment put it this way "The seal between the glass and the body is made via the ADHESIVE used to BOND the windshield into the body opening. A good read of the windshield installation procedures in BMW's own service documentation (TIS) shows that this bonding process even contributes to the structural rigidity of the car and can take anywhere from 4 to 20 HOURS to achieve maximum bond."

Few members here have comfort glass. Hopefully they will chime in on your issue.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that someone else had this same problem. Cant remember if it were here...maybe a benz site...but yes I know there is someone else with comfort glass that has side distortion.

There should be an invisible "hole" cut out at the top center and I think the top left for transmitters to be able to send a signal.

What is the difference between a climate comfort windscreen and a comfort windscreen? Isn't this the same thing? As Quicksilver says, the bond should be allowed to "mature" for 24 h at least. I had a windscreen go loose even 24h post sealing. Enjoy the new windshield!!

The guys at Alpha Auto Glass who have been in the biz forever told me that the down time was like any other car.... 2 hours. I think the BMW dealers propagate the idea of 24 hours so they can have the windshield guys come over and install the windshield!

Yes you do need to be careful for the next 24 hours.... especially with closing the doors to ensure a good seal.
