What's under the rear bench seat?

I've lifted my seat cushion and found a large steal hoop , kind of like a horizontal roll bar and it's boxed in to form the base of the seat. Then theres a rubber mat covering the sheet metal that forms the seat pan. Does anyone know whats under the seat pan? I'm going to install BMW sport seats and I may be cutting into the seat pan to fit the rails and lower the seat by two inches. If someone could post some pics or if they have some diagrams and could post them, that would be great. thanks

If you go a little deeper you'll find the inspection/service covers for the gas tank senders/fuel pump and the gas tank.

If a part is steel, it tends to be structural. They dont tend to use steel these days unless they have to, because of the weight.

You want to be safe then sorry? Don't drill and cut anything over there. Unless you know for sure what the hack you are doing. Good Luck...

I certainly do know what I am doing otherwise I wouldn't have even considered the project. The plans are nearly finished being drawn up. I've already taken measurements and figured out where I'm going to be welding too. Finding power is a snap.

Another project I am pondering is gutting a bimmer seat for its frame in conjunction with the rear bench fabricating a power 3rd row that folds out of the floor and into the spare well. Gonna need run flats or an ingenious way of storing the spare with some sort of cover in the rear the way the old jeep cherokees did. Fabrication's not the hard part, fitting it is. I've taken extensive measurements and I think I may be able to fit it. It's close. The spare tire well, which is trapezoidal is approx 32" X 32". Gonna need at least 11 inches for leg room, and about 4 inches in the rear to accomodate the seatback.

is the power seat function more important or that they're sport seats...

cuz if all you want is to have powered seats, you can try retrofitting the ones that come on some 7-series models...

if you want sport seats, must they power slide and tilt? then you can just gut the seat bottom. power recline i can picture...
