Good luck Laura!
Def weird. Should be able to unlock the rear doors by pulling the door handles from inside twice. It's all mechanical and not electrically operated.

On the X3, if the doors are locked and the windows are down, you can pull on the interior door handle all you want and it won't unlock. I haven't tried it on the X5 becuase I didn't want the alarm going off.

try climbing over the front seat to get into the rear to drop the seat down? Seems like just getting into the cargo area of a car shouldn't be this tough?

Obviously I could have done that with my dress on but chose not to. The point is the doors should open from the inside.

was your dad wearing a dress too?

so at this point, you still have not been able to start your car? Doesn't 2005 X5's come with roadside assistance? I know my GTI does... have a tow truck come and provide you a jump to get you going, and I'm sure the tailgate will open then.
