If you are not getting any codes - then it may also be your fuel filter. A friend of mine was having the exact same issue and I swore up and down that it was a cam sensor but he wasn't pulling any codes for one. Turned out his fuel filter was so clogged it was effecting engine performance.

I had the same thing happen to me today. I was driving our 2002 3.0 down the road when I saw a friend of mine walking, I stopped to talk to her for a little while and then proceeded on my way when we were done talking. About 10 seconds later the service engine light popped up and 'engine failsafe prog' came up on the display then it just died. When I started it back up the DSC, BRAKE, and ABS lights came on. The car drove fine and I continued my drive home. When I got home I turned off the car and then restarted it and the lights were gone. My husband is going to use his code reader when he gets home, but I was just wondering if anybody had some insight to our problem.

Like I said, I got the same thing: EML, DSC, ABS, BRAKE when my car threw p1500 and the Idle control valve crapped out.

The harness in pre 2004 cars is apparently known to fail.

They all went away when I replaced the valve. If it is not throwing a p150x then it could be something else.

Everyone, thank you for all the replies. I am trying to get my brother to scan it this week. Today I was not able to because the wife could not get off of work early. I'm hoping tommorow. It has not stalled any yet. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again for the replies. It's very much appreciated!

Well, my bother scanned it today. No codes were found.

It's been a few days since it has stalled. Do these codes only stay stored for a limited time? I didn't think they did. But then again, I do not know any BMW technicians.

Should I take it to my BMW dealer? I really do not like taking it there because they just do not know how to treat people properly.

If it has thrown a code, it would be there. But it is obviously not running right. Odds are though they will not be able to do anything more than you if it hasn't thrown a code,<besides guess>, and that will cost you more money than you guessing.

There were not any in 'pending' either? Pending is a code it has gotten once, but not twice and it stores those as well.

Very curious.

supark, I'm leaning towards that. I do not believe that it has been changed. It just rolled over 100,000 miles. I purchased it with 30,000 and that is one of the things that I never did to it.

At 100,000 can anyone recommend anything else I should do or look for?

Definitely change the plugs and you might want to somehow check the ignition coils as those are also a relatively common problem. Clean the MAF. I doubt the fuel filter is the problem at 100k miles, but it's good maintenance sense to replace it now.

From my experience you will not get codes from fueling or small spark problems like old plugs, which are not things the ECU directly monitors. Those would be good things to do.

Also what is the status of your crankcase vent/seperator system?
