Just bought 2000 X5 4.4 HELP adivice

The dealership I bought it at sold it certified. I was driving it home and noticed that it had a shake in the steering wheel between 80-110KM/H and then it goes away at higher speeds. The tire pressures are all good. My questions is, could it be ball joints/ tie rods /control arms? if so then that should have been replaced for the certification? the dealer is 3 hours away from my home so what should I do?

Another problem is the key fob. I used the key to charge it (3hours driving) and didn't work. So I reprogrammed it according to instructions of this site. Still not working? Any ideas?

Thanks

Check that the wheels are balanced first - any quality local wheel and tire joint can check/fix that for you for a few bucks. If that doesn't work then bring it back to the dealership and complain.

Several possible reasons for this. Your wheels may need to be balanced or your tires to be changed. I got a problem like that on mine and balancing the wheels would not fix the problem. The shaking disappeared once I replaced the tires. They did not look that bad but they were cupped. Worn tie rods can also exhibit a shaking in the steering at some speed. A sign for worn tie rod is also a loose/fuzzy steering. A sign of a worn ball joint is a clunking noise when passing over a bump. How many miles do you have on this car? Ball joints and tie rods issues are common issues around 70k/80k on this car. I had to have both sides tie-rods and ball joints replaced at that mileage.

Check the wheel balance first. The battery in the key may be dead beyond recharge. Good luck

Mileage is 120,ooo kms. I will have the tires re-balanced soon and then get the front end looked at here ( the dealer wants to look at it but I am 3 hours away!) and then no promises of being fixed then!!!! I will pay the inspection fee here and follow up accordingly!! ( hows that sound guys) Any other suggestions are welcome!

Do you have a local tire shop you trust? If so, have them check the balance.

Cool

klnteg if you just purchased the X5 certified from a dealership, get it back to them right away. Let them tell you if the problem is covered or not. BTW welcome to X5 world!

Yes I have a good shop up here! I was thinking that if I can eliminate the problem with a simple tire balance then I am ok with that!

The other problem is that if I go all the way down to T.O (3 hours one way) they will tell me that it needs something and they cant fix it today so then I have to drive home and then back down, or leave the vehicle there and then drive back down to pick it up!!! Just a big headache!!!!!
