2006 X5 Brake Pad life?

I have a 2006 X5 3.0 that I got last month. It had 26,400mi. Someone traded it in at a Lexus dealership, and it was a CPO before that.

It has a little over a year left under the original maintenance and and then the additional CPO warranty.

I took it in and it just had the Inspection I done. They checked the brakes and the front pads are at 10mm, and the rear at 8mm. Which I thought was odd, but I don't know what was done when in the past.

I've searched on here the best I can tell, they should be more than 3mm (or as little as 1mm).

So my question is, how thick are they "new" ? Ideally I'd like BMW to replace them before the maintenance is up, if they are going to wear out soon. Or are these nearly new as it is? I'm just trying to judge how fast they wear out and where I'm at.

Depends on driving style, so you never really know.

PO was probably a two-footed driver. We've all seen them before...going up a hill, brakes lights still illuminated, sitting 6 inches from the steering wheel.

I am in the same boat as you except mine goes into the dealer next week for the inspection. What is some things to look for to have the dealer replace or repair before the warranty runs out.

I don't know how thick these are to begin with, but you still have over a year of original 4 year maintenance left? I wouldn't worry about it over the next year and make sure on your last visit before your maintenance expires that you make a request to have it checked and replaced if necessary.

I guess I'm just wondering if these are nearly new, then I just won't worry about it. If they are already quite a bit into them, then maybe run them a bit harder so they are replaced by next year.

It really does depend on your driving style and city/highway conditions, but I got my rotors and pads changed just before the warranty expired at 35k mi.
Pads were good, but the rotors hit the minimum thickness.
(btw, my dealer's cost on that: $900 for the front!)

Yes, they are in good shape. I haven't measured them or can't recall the dimension, but from memory I would estimate that new pads are between 10 and 12 mm. I would say your fronts have been done fairly recently, and the rears may be original. Unless you really abuse them, I wouldn't expect you would need brakes before your 1 year maintenance is up, but it is always worth getting the vehicle checked over the month before your prepaid maintenance expires, as suggested by another poster above.

My brakes were changed at 23k and I just had them changed again at 52K, my vehicle was a demo so I have 55K under the original warranty. Not sure if the pads were bad the first time because that was done before I owned the vehicle. They were replaced at 52K only because I had a warped rotor not due to pad wear. I drive my X5 hard so I am not sure what it takes to actually get them to wear quicker but it would be fun to try. I had one dealership tell me the wouldn't replace the rotor until the pads were worn and the indicator light was on and had another dealership not even argue and changed them due to the rotor.
