Just recently purchased a 4.8is. Owned a 02 M3 and needed more space with the family. I am very happy with the X5. The stereo could be better but I would say it was about the same as the Harmon in the M3.

I'd give it an 8..mainly because there are no 10s and to get in 9 in my book it would need some serious power improvements. Not saying its slow..at all. But if you dropped the 507hp V10 from the e60M5 than you have a 9 out of 10.

This is when you are considering it against ALL other vehicles out there. If you limit the field to SUV's or other family haulers it is a most definitely a 10!! Hell it's 5100 lbs and you can fling it around a corner like it was a coupe!

Shit enough typing..I gotta go drive!

Good luck on what ever you end up with!

again, I wanted to thank all of you for your honest replies. Another question I wanted to ask is, how comfortable are your 4.8is's for the daily commute, especially over crappy roads? my m3 gets a little beaten up in the nyc area. i recently test drove a lexus (did I just day lexus??!?!) 400h, the car was pretty nice, gets the mileage and the whole thing, was comfortable and was kind of fast. but yes, I am drawn to the 4.8is but it has to be comfortable on the fdr and third avenue bridge...thanks again,
evan

Well the ride is firm but not uncomfortable. I have a bad back and I have found the seats to be so damn comfortable that I am considering ordering another seat and welding the bottom half of an office chair to the rails...hooking up a small 12-volt battery and working in style.

Oh yeh..go with the no cost comfort seat option. I love the sport seats but if you want true comfort then they are a must!

And as far as comparing the performance of any other SUV except maybe the Cay Turbo...don't bother. I am not saying that other SUV's aren't nice..even the Lexus...but the 4.8is is truely one of BMW's finest products as of late.

Good luck!

I agree with an earlier post, the bizarre shift points make it a difficult car to enjoy in continuous traffic.

My wife and I today drove through some traffic while she was in our X5 3.0.

I had to really give it some gas to get up and keep up with her (he he, she IS a bit of a lead foot though) so I can't say the intelligence of the learning transimission is to my liking.

The sound system is VERY average. An X3 I drove recently sounded better so I am in the process of changing it out.

I test drove a demo that handled like a dream. My current car causes me to brace myself with an elbow as it understeers around a sweeping bend.

I am going to trade it in when the (supposed) new X6 comes out and won't go for more power next time around. In my case, I think the power it has got is not handled well by the shift logic and I would rather less power and better driveability.

I think that your problem is the valvetronic technology. It's not so responsive as the old version and for me also the 6 shift gear is not good as 5! In the 6 it doesn't use properly each gear, it change continuously and the torque seems to be higher
