Sounds like battery but test thew output on your alternator aswell. You might be able to keep that battery and charge it. but if your alternator is not putting put then thats your problem. hope that helps

update... the car drives fine when it said the failsafe program...
now just the battery light is on... so if the alt was bad wouldnt the batt just die? but the volt meter on my cap for my system says its keeping everything around 14 volts like when the ac kicks in it drops but goes back up... when the bass hits it goes down then back up.. so u think the alt is dead? or the batt.. thanks guys Edit... the batt starts at 12.8 then when i start up it goes to 14 volts.. Also when i have it in drive... it goes to S mode in the Drive mode... and it will just stay there... and when i have it in manual mode it will only stay in manual mode and wont move to Sport/Drive.... think its just the battery? because of low voltage? Quick trip to Auto Zone, they normally will test your battery and alt for free.

did you check the voltage at the battery? Sometimes it differs down the line. when you disconnect the battery terminal reset the computer by turning the key as if you are going to start the X5. Works on my other cars?
