Question Alternating-code garage door openers

The owner's manual is a bit spotty on programming alternating-code garage openers into the Home-Link transmitter - has anyone successfully set-up one of these units?

Took me a while to get mine done (not the brightest bulb sometimes). What I had to do is do the first programming step like it was not a rolling code. I think it involvs you holding an existing remote up to the universal control in the car and doing the button press. Then, repeat the steps for the rolling code set up (pushing the button on the opener and then the button on the universal within 30 seconds).

Check out page 112 of the owners manual.

You might have to program the homelink to the opener itself. Look at the opener and see if it has a learn button on it. I had to do this in order for the homelink to work. Programming the homelink to the remote won't work.........Phil

Yes, I've never had a problem configuring the X5's homelink system to any of the garage door openers I have set it up for (all of which used the rolling code technology). As stated above, most rolling code openers have a "learn" button on them to do the programming. My Liftmaster openers allow you to do this "learning" right from the wired open/close button rather then having to climb up on a ladder to do this. It's very helpful to have both the garage door opener manual as well as the BMW Homelink instructions handy while doing the programming.

Worked for me. There should be a learn button. Make life a lot easier. GL.

I live in a condo that has a parking garage with an in- and out-door... not sure if the door openers have learn buttons, but I'll check tonight.

Thanks,

I have a Genie garage door (rolling code) and could not get it to work. Read manuals, and followed instructions and yet could not get it to work. It had worked great with previous X5! I am "stumped" and frustrated. Anyone have any clues that my help? Any minor detail instrucions/info may make a different. Thanks

Only bit I know is that, if your Genie opener is older than 1998, it won't work with Homelink. Just my luck, I bought mine in 1997.

Of course, since you say that it worked with a previous X5, then I don't have a clue.

Here's the instructions from Genie's web site:
Quote:
HOMELINK IN-CAR PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
To program a built-in-car transmitter to a rolling code garage door opener (Genie rolling code is called Intellicode, Liftmaster/Sears is called Security plus), you should take the following steps.

Clear out anything previously programmed into the in-car system from the factory by holding down on the 2-outside buttons simultaneously, until the in-car red light starts flashing rapidly. This may take up to a minute. (In a few cases, some make cars require the keys to be in the ignition, or the car motor must be running, or the car door must be shut)

Decide which button you want to make to be your in-car garage door transmitter. Hold your transmitter up near the selected button, pressing both the garage door remote and the selected in-car transmitter button simultaneously. Hold down on the buttons until the in-car, red light flashes rapidly. this sets the in-car transmitter to be your garage door openers make transmitter, but you are not done. You now need to make this in-car transmitter your personal transmitter.

Go to the Learn Button on your garage door opener. The button is usually right next to the area the floppy antenna is connected to the motor head. With Genie it is most often behind the light lens, and flashes red when pressed. With Sears or Liftmaster (Chamberlain) it is near, or part of, the terminal screw board. Press this learn button momentarily. A red light should start to flash or an amber light come on and stay lit. Go back to the in-car transmitter button you programmed and press this button 3 or 4 times, or until the door starts moving. This should set your in-car transmitter to your garage door opener.

When starting from scratch, for a rolling code opener here's what to do:

1. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "On" position (2 clicks, or as far as you can turn without starting the vehicle)

2. Press and hold both outside keys of the BMW Universal Transmitter until the indicator lamp flashes, and then release them. Doing this step causes all of the channel keys to be cleared.

3. Hold the hand-held transmitter a few inches from the and press and hold the transmit button. While holding down the hand held transmitter butten, quickly press and hold the button on the BMW Universal Transmitter that you want this remote to correspond to. Hold both buttons until the indicator lamp on the BMW Universal Transmitter flashes rapidly.

4. Climb a ladder and access the back panel on your garage door opener. Press the "learn" button on the opener and then quickly press the button on the BMW Universal Transmitter that you just got done programming. Usually the lights on the garage door opener will flash a couple times to confirm the opener has been programmed. Check the instructions for your specific garage door opener, as your opener may have variations of this that you need to adjust to.

Beemer and DinanX5,
You probably did this but make sure you clear out any old codes by holding the two outer Homelink buttons for 30 seconds or so until it signals that it has cleared. Next go through the short process of training your Homelink button via your hand held garage door opener. Then finally go press the 'learn' button on your garage door opener and within 30 seconds go press the Homelink button you just trained. Viola. I have had no problems with two different brand rolling code openers doing it this way. Good luck to you both.
