For all of you that are currently having reverse/transmission problems you have my sympathy.

On mine it is the 'F Clutch' pack right at the back of the transmission causing the problem, the piston seal has blown causing the no reverse and also started wearing out the 'F Clutch' Friction material.

You can see the part in this ZF catalog PAGE 28 (fig77.040)

To me paying between $4,500-$7,000 was outrageous for someone to fix my transmission. So I took my X5 off the road and decided to undertake the project myself. Luckily I have another vehicle to drive. I'll have to say that it was a bit of a pain dropping the exhaust and all to take the transmission out but other than that it was pretty straight forward. The second hardest part was actually getting to the 'F Clutch' inside the transmission, but overall I found pulling it apart was pretty simple.

I've ordered parts for my transmission and plan to keep everything under $300CAD, I don't have a lot of free time to work on my X as I work 6 days a week explaining why I haven't yet completed the project, but I expect it should take another 7-8hours of work to get my X back onto the road again. So far I've probably spent 12 hours removing and tearing apart my transmission, etc.

I do warn that this undertaking isn't for the faint of heart, but it's completely possible if you are mechanically inclined and don't mind working on your favorite SAV, even for a white collared businessman like myself...

I have a bunch of pictures I haven't yet had time to post, but this is my thread I've started in regards to the 5hp24 transmission.

Best of Luck guys!

Franko
