Welcome, I'm new here as well. Same year X5, 2001 Black w/black interior,
35K miles. It belonged to a friend that owns 2 other vehicles. Love the low miles! As for a warrantee: I was able to get an aftermarket warrantee thru General Motors Protection Program (GMPP). It was resonable compaired to the BMW warrantee, which was about twice the price. I don't know whether it is offered in the UK, but worth looking into. The other benefit is that one of my "Shooting Buddies" is a Master Mechanic and manages an Automotive service station that has an excellent reputation. He has been a Godsend in knowledge of what needs to be done and what doesn't. The "Stealerships" will bill you for anything they even suspect can be a future problem. Be forewarned! Best of luck with your new X! I look forward to getting in it everyday, just to drive it!

rhys - mixed views re tranny - some appear getting oil changed circa 65k miles as they feel "sealed for life" may mean failure @ circa 130k. Whilst some feel there are longevity benefits from doing this change bear in mind that it may affect any bmw goodwill gesture if offered after a premature box failure as you will have caused the sealed unit to be tampered with by non bmw staff, ( bmw dealers wont open it afaik).
I have seen others on here deliberate that flushing/changing oil to box may cause problems and can cause lodged bits of muck to move and thus problems could be worsened or risk of same increased. I'm no technical expert - just elaborating on bits I have picked up - On my 02 Sport I'm torn between changing oil in box or leaving well be. One thing for sure - if you do go down this route make 100% sure that absolute correct lube used. Re faulty display - if it's an OBD2 fault code then I accept diagnosis, (albeit some code readers/software better than others so be careful) but if it's a dash display of the little yellow clock this would indicate coolant change overdue or indicator lamp not rest at last coolant change - one thing for sure overlooked coolant changes can be problem. Keep an eye on electric thermostat too as known to fail on M62B44 lump. Must shutup now as others on here no far more , (I'm not worthy etc.... lol). Welcome btw

Good luck with your X5 & welcome - At 63K, you are entering the interval where the water pump goes crappers (plastic vanes, 60-80K) so if you're going to do any engine work (serpentine belt, two 30mm dia hoses at the back of the engine, coolant change) you may want to include it whether in the shop or DIY rather than out on the road somewhere - check out the previous threads here as I did when I bought my 2001 X5 in 6/2005 - since replacing the noted "weak" points, mine's been running great.
What sort of guarranty did the dealer give you? Is it CPO?

Hi,transmission wat a mare ,my 01 was ok then last night i pulled off my drive half amile down the road then nothing their,no drive ,just sat in the middle of the road.Phoned my independent BMW, HURST AUTOMOTIVE LEICS,who said to turn it off then on again, done this got a little bit of drive enough to get to the side of the road and wait for the RAC recovery. My mechanic has told me it sounds as though the box has gone although he wont know for sure til today when it goes on the machine.I told him there was no warning nothing he said this is what these do they just GO as he replaced 3 this year at £3000 a time inc.Better start saving.
