of course there will be some sediments on the dirty side of the filter. what's important is what's in the "clean" side of the filter.

Does anyone have pics of the location of the fuel filter or can you describe approx. where it is located??

Due to a faulty fuel gauge, I have run out of fuel 4 times in the past year and would like to go ahead and change out the filter (not to mention I am at 120K miles and have not done it yet).

Im going to change it yearly. You should have seen the shit that poured out of the filter when i tipped it to drain it.

Black nasty gas, and crud...

It really is easy once you do it.. and dont get the lines mixed up.

I use shell super 93 ALWAYS unless Im taveling and cant.

The filter is simple, you drop the panel under the car (16-18 bolts), then take off the 4 lines connecting to the filter. Have a gatorade bottle or small bottle ready for gas to leak into. 2 screws drop the filter out, reconnect it, replace the panel bolts.... DONE.. clean fuel for a while.
In my experience Shell is clean fuel. It's what I use on all my vehicles. Perhaps your regular Shell station's tanks aren't up to snuff.

Is there a write up or pictures to show where this is? I looked under the X5 and saw a couple sets of plastic panels. Do I remove ALL plastic panels to get to it?

A quick search on fuel filter will give you many results. Try it.

To answer your question, the fuel filter is located on the driver's side under the back seat area. The belly pan can be removed to access the fuel filter.

Do you guys have Sunoco down there? We have it up here in Canada and have 94 fuel. Have used it on my X5 and my M3 for years and the fuel is always clean.

Also just a piece of advice and rules that I have always followed:

1) Fill up in the morning as the fuel is at its truest form, no heat do displace the strength of it.
2) Never fill your tank when the tanker is at the gas station as you will be getting all the crude from the tanker.
3) And if it's cold were you are try to never let your tank drop below 1/2 in the winter..but thats for the lines as well.
