What type of Engine oil brand???

Hello again, I was talking with my buddy today about what type of engine oil brand name is a good one to use for my 4.4 X. So we came up with 3 types that should work great. I just wanted to know what every one else thought about them, and what the hell is the difference. LOL!

Castrol syntec 5w-30

Mobil 1 5w-30

BMW High Performance 5w-30

If I were to put Castrol which BMW recommends, is this the same oil that comes with the BMW hp oil? I'm just curious as to I've been taken it to the dealer for the oil changes but I'm the type of guy that likes to get his hands dirty once in a while on the weekends. If anyone can shed some light here I'd really appreciate it. Thanks...

Do a search, as it has been discussed. They're all good, and using one over the other isn't going to kill your motor. When was the last time you saw a thread saying "OMG I USED THE REGULAR BMW SYNTEC OIL AND IT BLEW UP MY ENGINE!!!!"

I think the BMW synthetic you buy at the dealer is the same as the Castrol Syntec 5W-30 you buy at the stores, made in the US. There is a Castrol 0W-40 that is made in Germany and meets BMW LL-01 standards, and they're pretty much only sold at Autozone. Mobil1 I haven't tried but many people like it and I'm sure its pretty good too.

I have similar concern, I have a 2006 with only 7,000 miles and in June I had the first oil change, to my surprise the oil looks burn, I’m doing another oil change this week, but I don’t want to use the BMW (castrol) I thought about Royal purple. Can any one comment on this brand

No, Castrol Syntec 5W 30 sold in the U.S. is not the same Castrol sold at BMW dealers... The BMW castrol is the european formula which is a full synthetic.. Castrol Syntec is a hybrid...

Mobil 1 5W 30 is a full synthetic... There was a lawsuit some years back where Castrol was sued for advertising their Syntec in the U.S. as a full synthetic oil... Apparently Castrol won for whatever reason...

All oils turn dark brown after about 1000mi due to the heat. This is normal. In fact, there's no way to keep any oil golden-colored unless you change it every thousand miles. Brown is okay, black is bad.

However, 7k miles is about the right time to do your first oil change, so I'm not surprised that you thought it looked old.

I would stick to the BMW Castrol 5W 30 oil sold at dealers than experimenting w/ different brands / weights....

These cars are really finicky and using different weight / brand oils can cause problems down the road like oil separators getting clogged... I already had mine replaced last year...

I have owned several different BMW's and the oil in each one looked dark after it was changed.I have even tried changing the oil and filter myself and have had the same results.I have a 2006 Sequoia and a 2006 Range Rover,I run Mobil 1 in both and change the oil every 7500 miles. The oil still has the golden brown look when drained. My sons 2002 X5 has 60 k on it now and the oil is as dark now when changed as it was when it was new.

New motor oil is usually golden for only 1k miles. Then the heat eventually turns it brown, but thats okay. As long as its not "black", you're fine.
