$475 for water pump and belts - fair price??

Got 120K miles on the X and decided it is time for a water pump - hasn't failed yet, but started to hear some squealing noises over the weekend upon cranking and got a wiff of antifreeze last week, so figured I would go ahead and do it. My local mechanic quoted $475 for new pump, belts, and install. Y'all think that is a fair price??

Yes, that is a pretty fair price... Is this the first maintenance you are doing with the coolant system? or have you replaced other parts ie. expansion tank, thermostat , radiator etc..

That is sure a fair estimate. I was quoted by stealer $295 for belts alone including labor. Go for it.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yes, this is the first maintenance on the cooling system.

Is the T-stat an easy DIY or worth paying to have done?? I will be tackling spark plugs and O2 sensors here in a few weeks, so if the T-stat is something I can do myself, I would be willing to do so.

The T-stat is right next to the water pump. Since he is removing the water pump it would be extremely silly not to change the T-stat. Plus, you have to remove the water pump to change the T-stat. IMO, why don't you just check everything since the X will be at the mechanic? Maybe shell out some extra $$$ and get spark plugs, valve covers, T-stat, Oil breather hoses. That's if you haven't changed them already. Have fun...

Great idea! Maybe he should also get new tires, a battery and have it repainted too...I mean it is already at the shop.

Do the tstat; everything you would pull to do it will be off for the pump, as was stated. It is in a plastic housing, which I would consider suspect.

Bimmerdude likes to hypothetically throw around other people's dough, I have noticed. Everything non-cooling related he mentioned is easy DIY stuff.
