David have you replaced your CV boots? Water pump? From my readings I gather these are going to go next on my X.

Kendall thanks for the clutch pricing and "worse case scenario pricing" it helps me plan ahead.

Even with all the problems I still like the car. After my first out of pocket $1400. for new bushings, ball joints and control arms at 40K I went on Craigslist and bought a 89,000 mile 1 owner 93 miata for $1200. and have been using the miata to commute to work 70 miles round trip a day.
The miata has not cost me anything but $20. oil changes and it now has 110,000 miles. NOT a dime. I use the X only when I need to take my daughter and partner out at the same time. Otherwise it sits in the driveway. I try to run the car once a month on a short trip (40 miles) otherwise I have not used the X regularly in over a year.

There is not much documentation on the clutch for the X5, but plenty on the 3-series and 5-series for the same 3.0 litre 6cylinder engine on other boards... Most drivers have had clutches and flywheel replaced ~ 60-80k miles depending on where you drive...(I had mine done at 52k miles since the engine came out and only paid for parts.. The clutch only had a few milimeters left) I would recommend yanking out the CDV clutch delay valve, this causes more unnecessary clutch wear.. since it causes it to slip upon launch..

It is very difficult to know when a clutch is going bad... It will just start slipping when it's time to replace... If you replace clutch prior to slipping and have clutch life left, you can preserve the flywheel.. If not.. you have to replace clutch and flywheel together..

Kendall again thanks...

Will the Dealer remove the CDV for me? and does that void the CPO and any future extended warranty I might get?

My dealer yanked it out no questions asked when I was having my engine rebuild done.. Any independent should be able to do this as well.. you'll have to slightly change your driving characteristics though, for example, when upshifting into higher gears, you'll have to delay the clutch release a half second or so after you shift or else you'll experience a nasty jerk, since the CDV used to serve this function..

Clutch and flywheel is not covered under CPO anyway...

Thanks

So realistically in the next 5-10k miles I am looking at:
CV Boots
Clutch
Water Pump
Radiator hoses
Radiator?
Thermostat

Any other while they are at its?

BTW I just read about the window regulators on the X's. I almost never use my windows. Will they fail even if the window is not in use (i.e. up and sealed)?

Water pump / radiator / thermostat is covered under CPO, hoses are not.. Depending how the previous owner drove your car, clutches can go anytime on a BMW.. Window regulators failing is not dependent on how often you use them.. If anything, there are plenty of reports where they fail more from infrequent use.. However, window regulators are also covered under CPO... Yes, CV boots tend to tear or crack around the 4-5 yr mark w/ the mileage you have.. If you're lucky, you might get another year of use out of them..

Differential fluid should also be replaced at 60k miles.. I don't believe this is included in the inspection 2, but I had mine done..

I was going to say front end suspension work ie. sway bar links, ball joints, bushings and thrust arms going bad, but it appears you already replaced them..

Hope this helps..

Momma Mia! First, the Ferrari looks fabulous(of course) and I'm jealous you can fit in it, but I can't. Second, I am amazed at the list of went wrong. I can't relate to the clutch problems as I have autos on my 4.4 sport X5s and I avoided the sunroof problems by not getting sunroofs(they're rare, but out there). But my 2001 has had only really minor problems since purchasing it 6/05(no CPO)(he said in a whisper with fingers crossed). Battery is normal for all vehicles after 4-5yrs. Sounds like it was a local, short trip vehicle, which adds alot of wear. But once this stuff is dealt with, it should run pretty good. I'm getting the impression the 3.0 w/manual gets driven harder than others, leading to more wear. Many of us V8 owners also get the impression the 3.0 is just abit underpowered for muscling around 5000+lbs. It seems to work great in the X3, though. In any case, you've stumbled upon THE website for your X5 questions. Welcome and Good Luck!

Mark, THanks for the welcome

I am 6'1" 210 and fit in the Ferrari just fine. How tall are you? I had a 328 GTS before I bought the GT4 and found that model to be a tight fit. The reason I switched over the the GT4 was fit. I did have the drivers seat track extended 2" back and the steering wheel hub extended 1.5" forward. Perfect fit.

No sunroof on your X5's pretty cool! I never use mine and would rather not have one. Believe it or not I would still consider a x70 to replace my X in a few years. BUT I would NEVER buy one just lease. That way I could order a no-roof no option car and hope for fewer problems. Maybe even buy out at the end of my lease if I feel I got a good one.

I bought the 02 because it was 5 spd and was one of the few (almost) fully optioned ones I could find.

You might be onto something about the previous use. The PO of my X was a Female surgeon who lived in Rye NY (just outside the city) the car had very low miles and I am sure any driving in that area was slow speed stop and go as it seems to always be congested.

6'4', but it's all long waist, 42" sitting hgt - the best I can hope for, outside of a van or p/u, is a 40" headroom vehicle - not too many out there, especially if you want something "sporty" - I often say I have Jackie Stewart desires in a Reggie White body - My original reqs when looking for used was 4.4, sport, no sunroof, and it had to be red, blue, or green (I gave up black, grey, white when color TV came out). The no sunroof REALLY pared down the selection.(then color) Stumbled upon it on eBay (NYC), which worked out since I'm from Jersey and still have family & friends (& my brother-in-law's father was a NYC police officer, which was cool if the seller wasn't on the up'n'up). The 2006 I ordered what I wanted, now knowing what I really wanted.

Personnally, I like the E53 vs the E70 in looks - I'm hoping th E70 looks better to me when the turbo diesel becomes available - IMHO, I still think the 4.4 is the best fit for the X5 - best mileage of all the X5 engines and I do not like how the E70 ended up with a smaller gas tank, probably to fit the 3rd row seating (which is wasted on a single guy like me)

It's real tough letting the horses run back east. Retired out here to Idaho 6yrs ago and the cop/hwy mile ratio is very low out here. Have often cruised at 100+ for over 30+ minutes , which really isn't that much since the speed limit is 75 to start with.(Yay, for a Valentine) But it does let the engine purr at 2500-4000 revs. Rock solid, no way I'd drive an American car this way, too scary.

Am now looking into updating the audio/nav on my 2001, since Sirius requires the newer radio head unit, and if I start on that it leads to a MkIV nav, bluetooth, BSW speakers, amp, sub, etc. It could almost be perfect when I'm done.
