speaker brackets

anyone have success fabricating the stock plastic speaker enclosures to hold aftermarket 6.5" speakers? I measure them both and it looks like it should fit if i just dremel out the stock crappies.

Does anyone sell pre-made ones? Any reason why I should NOT attempt this?

You do not have to "dremel" out the factory speakers. There are small tabs that hold the speakers in - if you pry a little, the factory speakers will pop out. You might want to leave the tabs to hold the new speakers in place. Some have been able to get 6.5's in there by modifying the speaker surround to fit into the factory bracket.

are these tabs plastic and visible from the front of the plastic bracket? Should i pry the speaker out from the front or attempt to push it out from the back? Maybe I'm retarded but I can't seem to figure out how to get them out. I have an '00 4.4i with Factory NAV system.

I would prefer to not maul them if I ever want to return them to factory spec.

Man, it has been so long since I did it, I cannot remember. Do a search for aftermarket speakers - I swear I thought there were some pics on here showing how to remove the speakers.

I just researched the same thing and ended up putting some Focal 6.5" in. Someone said in a post I read that speaker man. like Infinity, Polk, and some other ones say their speakers are 6.5" but are closer to 6". The housing for the stock speakers do seem a little larger than 5.5"
I almost fit the Focals in, but I did had to Dremel the outside of the Focal to make it fit.
Things you will need (cuz you have to use the BMW housing) are a soldering gun, and a small flat head screwdriver to pry out the OEM speaker. Also be sure to check the depth of the new speaker before you retrofit. The housing isn't that deep.

Hope this helps.

thx for the link, good lookin' out. I was able to get the crappy stock speakers out via those instructions without mauling the enclosures. My speakers are almost exactly the same circumfrence (slightly smaller) and the depth of the magnet is only maybe .25" deeper. Looks like it should work just fine, just gotta figure out if I am going to try and tap into the stock wiring harness or run new ones. I think I am going to glue gun my speakers in and screw them into the plastic for a tight seal. Still need to figure out how to mount my tweets but no biggie.

we350z, did your 6.5" speaker fit without modifications?

Yes, I just dry fit it and it appears to fit perfectly flush. For final seating I will apply thin layer of silicon or glue gun and screw them into the bracket plastic bracket I'll prob drill some pilot holes before hand.

BTW - I love these speakers, they really punch (you have to amp them with the xovers since they are component speakers). They can handle 100W RMS / 400W peak.

I haven't scope out how the rear speakers will mount yet (brackets? directly to baffle in door?) Also I need to figure out how to remove factory tweets and mount up the perfects.

Good to know. I'll be doing this soon. BTW did you have to take the interior door handle pull to get the door panel out? or just the 3 screws? Thanks
