Unhappy Back bumper hit

on my brand new 05 X5 3.0d. At a traffic light stop some idiot with a Jag went right into mine. Its a low speed impact, and although my tail bumper has some small scratches, the sides are slightly sticking out which probably means that it got deformed by the impact. Anybody know how difficult it is to change the tail bumper? Would it require a long stay at the dealers?

I think it was a total of 6 screws that hold it on there. VERY easy to do yourself and save a ton of loot! Lots of rear bumpers for sale on ebay also. I will post a DIY with pics later today (Sunday).

Looks like I need to find a more maneuverable Torx driver to remove mine (4.4 black chrome tips are in the way, don't want to remove those), but here's the deal:

In the first photo of the rear wheel well, there are two 8mm screws that need to be removed.

If you're lying on your back, looking durectly under the bumper near the exhaust, you can see the T55 hardware that needs to be removed. There is a small cut out in the bumper to facilitate this, as shown in the second photo.

In the third photo, the T55 hardware is shown. It will be silver or bronze in color, as opposed to the other hardware which is black.

Depending on your model year, there may be a plastic piece directly below the center of the bumper attached with some small screws wich may also need removal.

One you have your bumper cover off, you can inspect the inside of it and see if it needs to be replaced as well. There are several covers and bumpers on ebay now.

Good luck!

I just had the same thing happen, if the shop has the parts, couple of days maximum. It's a easy job.

I left my car in the shop for two days because they have to coordinate with the insurance adjuster etc. I suppose that if everything is coordinated properly and the bumper replacement is all you need. You can have the shop order the bumper, paint it and be ready when you get there. Then I think it's no more than couple of hours to remove the old bumper and bolt the new one on.
