SAT/NAV upgrade

Sorry, me again. Just another quick question...

Does the SAT/NAV on the UK spec (06/03) X5 Sport do postcode search. It's a DVD system. I just bought an aN upgrade from ebay to V29.1 FOR £5. Now the seller is offering me the Mark IV DVD for Europe with Speedcameras for £45. Is this worth it? Is there an audible POI warning? Is this likely to be 3D perspective? Will I miss the TomTom 6 system I have been using?

I realise that last one is a question of personal preferences but I'm anxious to know how good the system really is from you guys..

Thanks a lot

Kevin.

Whistle

Hi Kevin,

Where did you get the V29.1 from, did it load OK.

I have just bought my E53 and have many questions, I hope you get a response to your queries.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

  1. £45 is for a copy DVD - this MAY work in your Mk 4 or it MAY NOT. Some Mk4 Nav Computers don't want to read copied DVD's - you take a risk.
  2. Ask when the camera database was updated. There is due to be a new Cam database released soom (next few days) - so this will be out of date
  3. V29. is the latest firmware. It will give 3D Perspective mode (you have to switch this on in the service menu 1st then activate it from the GPS menu).
  4. Postcode search is available on 2006 onwards DVD's. It is onlt 5 digit not 7 digit full search
  5. There is NO POI warning, and you can only have one type of POI visible at any time. So if you switch to Petrol Stations, your Speed Camera's will disappear.
I prefer the in-built system to stand-alone, but it is becoming very dated. My wife's Toyota Nav is 100 times better, though doesn't have 3D mode. For example, the POI's for petrol stations shows the graphic of the petrol company, which is nice.

I have stopped using the DVD with camera's on - I now have a stand-alone system on my O2 XDA Orbit (Called Cameraware) - it uses voice to warn of the approaching camera's - it says "GATSO/SPECS/Mobile Camera Ahead" or if you are going over the speed limit, it also says "Slow Down" - much easier than having to keep an eye on the nav screen.

Horses for courses though.....

I decided against the copy DVD in the end and managed to get a brand new BMW OEM 2007-2 DVD from Ebay for £35 + pp

Upgrading to 29.1 was a piece of cake. Ignition pos 2. Take out the DVD. Insert the new CD with 29.1 - message comes up on the screen asking you to confirm upgrade. 5 minutes later system reboots. Hey presto, all the software is updated.

Went into SET and held the menu key for 5 seconds. Quite a few new options in there like GPS tracking, etc. and the famouse perspective view. Switched it on. Rebooted.

No difference (ie maps are 2D and flat)

Maybe because my map DVD is are 2002-2, dunno, have to wait for the new DVD to turn up.

Are your sure I cant use my subscription on pocketGPS world to patch the OV2 files for UK speedcameras. Couldn't I rip the DVD, add the OV2 files and reburn it using something like Alcohol 120?

Anyway, I've got an XDA with TomTom 6 which will be in a Brodit cradle so in theory I'm wasting my time anyway

I'll let you know how I get on...

Kev
