oil top-up - new 4.8is
Just been outside to check the oil on my 4.8. It's about a month old now and I check the oil about 10 mins after using the car. The level is about 4mm above the MIN mark. Should I have used this much oil? The car is new so I am thinking it's just been used whilst running in. What should I top it up with? Castrol synthetic? It's about 110F out here for the next couple of months, so that must affect it. Thanks

Pretty normal, imo. Top it up...any qual syn, or what your manual rec'ds. And, read this very informative oil Xpert link from the front page of this site. GL,md

Hi sayegh 914,
When you say problems with the oil do you mean it's burning a lot? Maybe we suffer because of the heat out here. Is your 4.8 quite new as well? Might improve as the engine is run in.

But don't worry it's not a big problem and congratz on youre new x5! my x5 has 30thousand km on it and it's a 2005 alpine white.

I have a fairly new 4.8is and just added oil as the check engine oil light came on... Seems normal as with new engines the oil has to work its way into the components and you use more in the first few thousand miles. It then levels off with the first regular oil change.

Yes, this is pretty normal in new engines. Not just on the 4.8is, but on my 4.4i as well. Just top it up for now, and it should be ok

I have run-in 3 new 4.8is during the past year and they've all been the same. They consume several litres of oil during the first few thousand miles then they stop using oil and you can just check it every few months as you normally would. There's nothing to be alarmed about, just make sure you check it every week or so for the first few thousand miles.
