Newb help please - known reliability issues??

Hello,

I am looking at used X5's in the 2001-2003 model year range. I am favoring the 4.4 since I will be doing some towing with the vehicle. I am familiar with the reliability and maintenance of the M62 engine as installed in the e39 540, as well as the typical service issues with e39 electronics, front suspensions, etc.

What are the maintenance and reliability issues for a 4.4 X5? Are they relatively the same as a e39 540? Are there some concerns unique to the X5 , or other areas that are better than the e39's of the same vintage?

Also, I have only owned BMW's with manual transmissions. What kind of life expectancy are people getting out of the X5 auto tranny's? Are they ZF made?

Thanks to all!!!

I had 2003 3.0i over 80.000 miles - no problems what so ever. Now got 2005 4.4 some issues with tranny jerking. Dealer is working on to get it fixed. My experinece is that 5 speed auto is pretty reliable and very smooth. 2004 they put new 6 speed auto in and that seems to have some issues. Go for 4.4i it sure has more torque you'll need when towing !

If you can have extened warranty get it.

No serious drive train issues. Some sporadic transmission issues, but nothing concrete to base a buy/or pass on.

You will not have a BMW warranty and remember, BMW's are expensive to fix.

The 4.4 is a great engine. Water pumps are known to fail, and some valve cover gaskets leak, but otherwise solid. I've got 87K on my 01' 4.4. Welcome

70K on my 2001 4.4 - no major complains - afew minor, but I figure that comes with a now 6yr old car - water pump seems to go between 60-80K (already replaced mine) - most of the exterior lights died between 51-53K miles is the only weird thing I experienced, still have 1 original headlight & 1 foglight - Find a GOOD BMW mechanic and let him check it out at least once a yr - I always have mine looked at before any long trips - Still modding mine, good luck with yours & welcome

2000 x5 WITH 127000KMS REPLACED in the last few months.... CV boot. Window regulator ( expect all those to go) radiator is on its way out. going to need a final stage resistor shortly! and a few minor things that shouldn't have broke! I feel as though I have done to much maintenance for a vehicle of this caliber and mileage! I am starting to re-think my purchase choice.. Might have been better off with an Acura or lexus!
