I wouldn't advise against doing this job yourself. It is a little bit technical, and it's always hard to lake everything from the writetup literally. We don't all understand and percieve things the same way.

It's a good article but there are some gaps. I think if you use the article (indcluding the BMW TIS info) in conjunction with this thread you should be able to make your way through no problem. I am thinking about creating a version 2.0 to cut out all the fluff and include the less than obvious info for the method discussed in this thread.

This is where I used air chiesel. Slide boot all way down and knock this thing out.

Just so you know. It literally flew out. And I went this way because NOTHING would move other end of axle from the hub.

To others:
This is pretty straight-forward job. I'm not mechanic daily, but I do work on cars and this is my hobby. Took me about 3 hours start to finish to do this job.

I see, I will get the compressor fired up. So you did not use a vice? You just pushed the inner boot back and stuck the air hammer in there and let it rip? I'll make sure to shoot it into something that will catch it without damaging it.

WOO HOO AIR TOOLS!!!

Guys, i'm in the middle of this procedure now....Thx for taking the time to post this tread as it has been a tremendous help for me....I am at the point where its time to remove the inner and outer cvs from the transaxle. I removed the bands on the inner boot and pulled back the large end of the boot and bunch of oil like fluid pored out. Is this normal??? I was expecting grease not oil. Also, we350z how did the air chisel work on removing the tristar from the shaft as that'll be my next task...Can u think of and easier way to get it off the shaft? I don't want to damage it with the air chisel.

No problem, we are here to help. I don't think you should be seeing any oil type differential fluid unless you removed the tulip element from the differential iteself, rather some lithium type grease amber in color (may be darkened somewhat by metal shaving particles from the tripod bearings).

Has the CV join been serviced previously? Maybe someone used the wrong (or different) lube.

I am on the same step. I haven't tried the air hammer quite yet. I will be doing that this week. I am trying to determine i need to use my vice or not. Not sure you risk damaging anything if you are careful and hit the tripod star on it's collar. I think putting the thing in a vice some how would help tremendously.

No one has touched this side but my indy did the other side last year. All I did was peal back the large end of the inner boot to see what is behind it and this oily fluid poured out..about 1/2 quart. I guess its differential fluid but I haven't touched the tulip element. The assembly is still fully in place but ready to be removed....I stopped when the fluid poured out because i dont remember reading anything about it pouring out. Sos i was hoping that urs did the same thing but I guess not...Sooo??? Are u doing the right, passenger side too?

Front driver side. I can't imagine it would be anything different for the other side. I think you should pull it out and see if its leaking from the tulip element (from the diff). How many miles on the car? Some of mine dripped out in globs but it's definately not oily. You can see what my grease looks like in the picture i posted.

it worked

The air chisel worked great, no vice needed. I held the shaft in one hand and gently hammered the cv bearing off and it fell down into my hand...I eased up to a very slow speed as it neared the end of the shaft so it wouldn't shoot across the room. To pry it off as evenly as possible, I moved the chisel around and pryed at 3 different locations on the bearing so it wouldn't bind. It was easier than getting the brake rotor off which was a pisser for me. Anyway, I slid the old boots off and new boots on and then used a large socket to hammer the cv bearing back on the shaft..a little time consuming because I didn't have anyone to hold the socket in place while I hit it and it fell off the bearing after each wack. I used the new c clamp that came with the boot kit and it clipped back in place with a little effort.

The boot kits come with a packet of grease which is the same for both the inner and outer. The grease is identical to the grease in the outer. My inner had differential/transfer case fluid in it from the bmw factory but the inner boot kit contained the same grease as used in the outer. Hope it works...don't see any reason why it won't because it works fine for the outer.

This job is not hard if u take ur time and use the right tools especially the ball joint tool from autozone that we350z shows a picture of...It makes the ball joint separation effortless. The air chisel works great too. It took me three 2 hour nights to complete the job....Well worth the effort considering I saved between 500.00 and 600.00.

I am a weekend warrior, not a mechanic. If u can replace a waterpump then u can replace the cv boots as well. Thanks to everyone.
