Wow - scary amount of damage to the front end of the other car and gald everyone is OK
I hope that the hitch didn't transmit the entire impact to critical structural parts and therefore avoid allowing the energy absorbing bumper and parts to absorb. I've seen a car in the UK where the exterior was perfect but a hitch impact had trashed the underneath.

that's exactly why i always keep the tongue/ball in the hitch.
back in '01 I had my 4.4 for about 5 days when I got rearended on the 405, his accord took a lot of damage.
