Not manadatory but why not? Good safety indicator. Only costs $15/sensor and there's only 1 forward and 1 back.

I agree. Mine was changed together with the rotors and pads.

ahh i thought it was one per wheel, thanks!

wondering why mine didnt go off yet tho... maybe it is busted or maybe it wasnt replaced last time.... any way to easily tell? Is it part of the pads or the rotor? Maybe my pads are good still?

The sensor is very simple, its basically a loop of wire.
The sensor is attached to the backing plate of the brake pad.
As the pad wears, the backing plate (and sensor) gets closer to the rotor until such point as the sensor rubs against the rotor.
At this point, the wire loop is broken and the warning message appears.
The sensor is now shot and will need replacing.

So, its unlikely that your sensor is busted.
If there was a problem with the sensor or the wiring the warning message will appear - i.e. if the wiring was broken this would cause an open circuit and look like the sensor was worn through.
