Anyone Installed the Da'Lan Trailer Hitch?

Sorry if this is redundant, all over again, but I have been off the web for a while- has anyone installed, or has anyone any knowledge, thoughts, opinions about the Dalan hitch?

If you are going to do any towing of any sort, from all of our past experiences, it is best that you get the BMW Hitch kit. Not to knock Dalan or Draw-Tite, but the BMW Hitch kit comes with some reinforcement so you don't damage your rear subframe.

I heard that, but do you know for a fact that the Dalan hitch is in any way different from the OEM hitch?
Previous discussion suggest that this brand hitch is identical to the OEM.

The OEM hitch comes with a replacement rear subframe and bumper(you remove your bumper cover from the old bumper and install it on the new bumper)and a complete wiring kit.

I continue to be amazed by the OEM wiring kit. It disables the RDC and the "Curb finder" right side mirror when the trailer lights are connected(and probably other functions that I haven't discovered yet)!

Look at the pictures of the kit in the DIY section - there's no comparison.

Edit to add - Ya' know, the correct question should be "Do you know for a fact that the Da'lan hitch is in anyway equivalent to the OEM hitch?"

isn't the oem hitch made by da'lan? da'lan makes the oe hitch for other bmw models...

but i suspect the oem hitch you get from the dealer has other parts that make the install perfect...

Not trying to start a pi**ing contest here, but....
Yes I have looked at the pictures in the article.
I also read where the Dalan hitch is exactly equivalent to the OEM hitch. Thought to be of very high quality of fit and finish, not to mention considerably les costly.
Yes I know that both the Dalan and the OEM replace the rear sub frame.
Yes the OEM wiring hitch is swell, and I fully plan to buy it..
My question remains- does anyone here have any factual information on the question?

All want to know is if they are similar, or different- one from the other? Aside from the BMW logo and the cost.

I'm curious as to the Dalan as well. $500 for a hitch is REALLY pricey. I'll pay it if I have to, but if the functional equivalent exists at 1/2 the price, that's where I'm going.

Does anyone know for a fact whether the Dalan hitch replaces the subframe, etc like the BMW hitch?

I believe they are different...

- My OEM hitch was made by Westfalia, not Dalan. There is no BMW logo on it, just the Manufactured by Westfalia stamp. It is in a BMW box. The kit contains other BMW parts in addition to the drawbar. I have read that it is made for Westfalia by Holland Hitch, but I can't prove that.
- I understand that the Dalan kit does not replace the 'impact absorbers' that collapse and absorb impact in the event of collision, like the OEM kit does. The reason to replace them is that the new (solid) pieces transfer the load from the rear sheet metal, to the longitudinal box sections. They spread the load out, basically. This is the key to the strength of the OEM hitch. If the Dalan hitch does replace these two pieces, someone please correct me.
- The Dalan website notes that for their hitch, the fascia requires minor trimming. I am sure it is not a big deal, a Dremel would do it fine, but the fact is that the BMW hitch does not require any trimming of the fascia. Leads me to believe they are not the same item.

Having said all that, apparently Dalan make very nice hitches. I have heard lots of good things about them. I wouldn't buy one for my X5, but given that BMW doesn't make hitches for many of their other models, Dalan would be my first choice there. It wouldn't be a class 3 hitch, but I wouldn't be towing that much with one of those other models. For the X5, I recommend the OEM hitch. Yes, I can see both sides of the argument. But having installed the OEM hitch, I wouldn't put anything else on there.

Just my $0.02.

no experience with Dalan, but I did install the OEM hitch today. Very simple, yet time consuming. Very nice setup. FWIW

That's how I felt originally also. That is, until I looked in the box. I've never seen a hitch install kit that complete and I've installed prob'ly a dozen different aftermarket hitches over the past thirty years.

IIRC, the X5 was a bit pricey too. Bottom line, it's your X, do what you want.
