Trunklid open message and won't open - HELP PLEASE!

Hi guys, old timer here, but infrequent poster. I hope my friends here are all doing ok.

Question -- My wife's 2005 X5 4.4i's liftgate won't open via the keyfobs OR the button near the shifter. Her X5 has the softclose latching. We read the manual to find out how to manually open the lid.

Now, the lights stay on in the back, and we cannot get the hatch open except manually. I fear the lights are going to drain the battery dead.

I did a search here, and found the trunklid open/felt tape/foam thread, but it doesn't quite seem to address the issue of not getting the trunklid open except manually.

Any help would greatly appreciated; I fear a dead battery tonight if I don't get this figured out!

Much thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys/gals, here is the latest. After further searching here, I was able to make the trunklid lights going off by adjusting the rubber stops (thank God I bought a Torx wrench when I did the iPod retrofit on my 6!) Also, the rattle went away.

However, that still doesn't solve the problem of the trunklid failing to function with either the key fobs or the dash button. While adjusting the rubber stops, I DID notice that the other rubber stops that simply attach to the screws -- well one of those is missing. Also, when I close the trunklid, the softclose function fails to operate.

Could this simple missing piece be the root of my problems? It doesn't make sense that this would do it, but what do I know?

Thanks again!

Replacement of a relay (under the hood) solved the problem, for archival purposes.

I had the opposite problem about 3 months ago. Suddenly trunk lid would not latch closed. Of course, it happened on a weekend morning. However, my local dealership replaced the electrical latch mech on Monday. I guess our experiences just reinforce that some of the doodads will fail occasionally.
