anyway to verify mileage shown by odometer?

Where is the mileage stored on an X5?
Is it stored with the cluster or with the main computer?
Can the information be programmed in if the unit that stores the mileage is replaced?

Yes to the cluster. Not sure about the ECU.

Yes, by the dealer.

Why do you need to know? If the mileage has been altered you will see a dot in the cluster display. Do a search on the site to find a pic.

This dot will also appear if you have ever got your cluster repaired due to pixel problems or have got the cluster replaced.

I ask becuase

The mileage and the condition of the vehicle don't seem to match.
I did a carfax
The car had only 32k on it in 2005, The dealer sold it in 2005 as a CPO car.
Then in 2006 the car has 62k total miles on it.
Between 2006 and 2007 the car had another 10k in miles added.
no other reports in car fax for maint or dmv.
The car looks almost brand new.
I know that it could be a good detail job on the exterior and interior, but not undeneath.

Here are a few photos of the underside,
Rear diff, gas tank, transfer case, muffler , driveshaft, cv, suspension, brake caliper
Look how at the low dust level to no dust level
excuse the focus and size of the photos. I was going for details.
The underneath looks really clean for 73k and to be 5 years old and for the last 40k to be out on in the last two years.
Some of the exhaust bolts look factory new.

What year is this X? Also, are you saying that someone put 30k on the ticker in a year? Then only added 10k the next?....Phil

I can't see why someone would tamper with the mileage to make it higher.
Doesn't make any sense.
If 30k was put on in a year, then was obviously a lot of highway miles, which corresponds to the excellent condition the car seems to be in.

That being said, BMW's, if properly taken care of, and not driven in the salt, can easily still look new. My '01 has 90k on it and a lot of people think its a year or two old, or that I just bought it brand new. (I get a lot of comments at work to the effect of 'gee, how do you afford a 50 or 60 thousand dollar car?')

Yours looks to be a really clean car. Looks like you made a good purchase.

Interesting. So it looks newer than the mileage indictes.

Could it be a salvage job?

Carfax

I don't think anyone tinker with it. I was just wondering if it was possible to have the odometer replaced with a higher mileage one and how would the issue be corrected?

I could see the top side of the car being very clean, but I couldn't see how the underside would be so clean with almost 30k put on it in one year.

Here is a copy of the carfax.

NOVAX5 is on a distinguished road
Here is what i see from carfax:
Owner 1: brand new, took a good care of the car, the car stayed clean, low miles.
Owner 2: dealer, auction, the car still stayed clean, low miles (2days of ownership)
Owner 3: travels a lot on highway, but the car still stayed clean because of the short time own.
You: the car looks clean but because of the owner 3 you got high mileage.
30K miles/a year sounds plausible. Thats about 82 miles/day. Not that much. I commute from NOVA to GreenBelt MD, thats about 40 miles oneway, 80miles/day. But i put them on 3 different cars.
Dont worry about it. If you ever find out your dealer cheated you (salvage, flood, junkyard titles) you could get about 10 brand new cars with a lawsuit, and their used car lot will be sold to open up a new McDonald.
